CHAPTER 8 - Search
Early evening the next day. A stiff breeze whipped Matthew’s hair into peaks as he gazed out over Blackwater Lake. The rays of the summer sun, not far from setting, glinted sparkles off the water; from the picnic area a waft of smoke and frying onions reached his nostrils. On the opposite shore, the row of Scotch pines stood, thick and impenetrable. He’d come here for answers, but would the lake supply them?
If his mother had killed Kerensa, her body must be buried in the park. It made sense, given Joe and Evie’s drinking sessions here, his father’s job as groundsman. But where? Impossible for her to be by the Blackwater family house. No chance of interring a corpse in the public area either; the disturbed earth would be a giveaway. One other possibility: her grave might be among the trees near where the police discovered his mother. He walked towards them until the dense brambles prevented him going any further. Oaks, not Scotch pines, lined this side of the lake, the thick undergrowth between the trunks proving Kerensa couldn’t be hidden here. Matthew doubted the area was any clearer at the time she disappeared; to bury her, his father would have needed to hack through the brambles. Granted, his job afforded him the necessary tools, but the task would have taken too long. Besides, the ground angled up towards the car park at almost forty-five degrees, making it less than ideal as a grave site. Wherever Kerensa Price’s body lay, it wasn’t here.
The only other possibility was Blackwater Lake itself. When the police divers found his father’s body, they’d not taken long. If Kerensa was there, her body must be beyond their search area, which meant anywhere within most of the lake. Sure, he held diving qualifications; he could hunt for her remains amid Blackwater’s depths. How the hell to do it without drawing attention to himself, though? The idea held danger, too. He’d need to dive solo, at night, and weeds choked much of the water. Safety concerns ruled it out as an option. If Kerensa lay on the lake bottom, she’d have to stay there. Perhaps some secrets shouldn’t be uncovered.
